On this day the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (CPI-ML) was launched, to coincide with the birth centenary day of Lenin. Charu Mazumdar was elected as the secretary of the central organising committee.

The CPI-ML was formed by the All India Coordination Committee of Communist Revolutionaries, which had split from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1967 after a long period of conflict.
