On this day, the name of the sub-division Jahanabad was changed to Arambagh. Currently, Arambagh is a sub-division in the Hooghly district of Bengal. The new name was a reference to an outstanding garden in the area that was called Arambagh. It means a garden of leisure.
Jahanabad had been formed as a sub-division in 1879. The area is the birthplace of many great persons.
Raja Rammohan Roy was born in Radhanagar, which is part of the Arambagh sub-division. The village Birsingha, where Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was born, is now a part of the Paschim Medinipur district, but is nearby and was part of the Hooghly district then. Shri Ramakrishna was born in Kamarpukur, in the Arambagh sub-division.
The Hooghly district website says that Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay wrote his novel Durgesh Nandini when he was posted as sub-divisional magistrate at Jahanabad, after coming across Garh Mandaran, an old fort in the area.
