Adwaita Mallabarman, who wrote the novel Titas Ekti Nadir Naam (A River Called Titas), died on this day. He is remembered most for this novel, which Ritwik Ghatak made into a film, though he wrote prolifically through his brief life.
The sweeping, epic novel is about the life of the Malo (fisherman) community, to which Mallabarman belonged. He was born in Gokarnoghat village by the river Titas, in Comilla district (now in Bangladesh). The expenses of his education expenses were borne partly by the community, in which literacy was very low. After finishing school he arrived in Calcutta and worked as a literary editor.
In Calcutta, he worked for magazines, including Mohammadi. Parts of the first drafts of the novel were published in this magazine. He was diagnosed with tuberculosis in 1950. He died after a brief period of treatment. He was 37. He had left the manuscript of Titas with his friends.
