On this day, Lloyd’s List reported that the ship Valetta had been wrecked on July 10, 1825, on the coast of New South Wales, but its crew and most of its cargo were safe.
Valetta launched at Howrah, Kolkata, in 1821. It was first called Recovery and later renamed Valetta.
It was built by J. Thomas. The 1824 East India records showed it registered at Kolkata and mentioned its master’s name as J.W. Phillips.
It was one of the British ships that in 1823 anchored outside Macao, as the Chinese had stopped them from entering with their cargo of opium. In 1824, the ship was at Lintin, again with a cargo of opium.
In June 1825, Valetta had sailed from Sydney, bound for Manila. It was damaged when it hit the rocks driven by winds and could not be repaired. Lloyd’s List reported the loss based on a report from Sydney.
