The forecast was for rain but the city only got traces in isolated areas between Monday night and Tuesday night.

Districts like Nadia, Murshidabad, West Burdwan, Bankura and Birbhum got sharper spells of thunderstorms since Sunday night.

Southerly winds and the overcast conditions in the districts kept the day temperature under normal in Kolkata. At 23.7 degrees Celsius, the minimum temperature was three notches above normal.

Despite the lower- than-usual maximum temperature, the day felt hot because the moisture content was on the higher side. At Maidan and the Victoria Memorial, hats sold briskly and lemonade was the popular choice of drink.

But both the mercury and the moisture quotient are likely to drop marginally over the next two to three days, according to the Met forecast.

A Met official said a strong western disturbance triggered rain and snowfall in Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand as it moved from west to east.

“A cyclonic circulation had taken shape over Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, northern parts of south Bengal (Nadia and Murshidabad) and north Bengal. Most of the clouds were north of Kolkata,” he said.

On Tuesday, the circulation was “over interior Odisha and neighbourhood in lower tropospheric levels”, said a Met update. Under its influence, isolated rainfall is likely over Odisha, north Bengal and Sikkim in the coming days.

Now that the western disturbance has weakened, cold northwesterly winds trailing the system have started entering Kolkata.

“The winds started entering the city from Tuesday. The next couple of days are likely to be dry. The winds will lead to a slight dip in the night temperature,” said the official.
