Officials of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) said the delay was because the civic body took time to the debris from the site at Azhar Molla Bagan in Garden Reach

A team of engineering professors from Jadavpur University has started collecting soil samples from the Garden Reach site where an illegal under-construction building collapsed last month.

The team started to collect the samples on Saturday, more than a month after the building collapsed on March 17, killing 13 people.

Officials of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) said the delay was because the civic body took time to the debris from the site at Azhar Molla Bagan in Garden Reach.

The soil samples will be tested to assess the load-bearing capacity of the soil.

“The JU team started collecting soil samples from the site on Saturday. They have dug two pits on the plot where the building was located and intend to dig one more,” said a senior KMC official.

“The pits are being dug in such a way that samples collected will represent more or less all corners of the plot,” added the official.
