Two more persons were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the alleged sale of a newborn.

Police identified them as Golam Ambia, 50, and Mamta Patra, 28.

Patra lives in Nonadanga and allegedly was the link between the child’s biological mother and the racketeers who facilitated the baby’s sale to a homemaker from West Midnapore. The homemaker, the biological mother and four other women were earlier arrested.

A police team visited an infertility clinic in Behala on Wednesday, where the homemaker, who is said to have bought the newborn for Rs 4 lakh, had undergone treatment six years ago.

“Our clinic is not involved in this (human trafficking). The place where the patient and the woman who could have facilitated the deal met is somewhere near our clinic. Hence, the police came to visit us. We have shared all details with the police,” the manager of the clinic told The Telegraph.

The police said at least one of the four women who were allegedly involved in facilitating the deal met the homemaker from West Midnapore at a spot near the clinic.

An officer said the accused could be part of a larger racket. “They act as a bridge between childless couples and mothers who were willing to sell their babies,” the officer said.
