“Based on the complaint from the financial crime prevention wing of the private bank, a case was registered with Hare Street police station. The case was then taken over by the anti-bank fraud section of the detective department,” said a senior officer at Lalbazar.

According to the complaint, suspicious transactions to the tune of Rs 103 crore were reported in the bank account.

During the probe, the police found that the bank account was opened in the name of a shell company named Marfik Tech Solutions that did not have any existence and the sole purpose of the account was to facilitate illegal transactions. “A preliminary investigation suggested that the account was meant for turning black money into white through illegal transactions in the name of a fictitious company,” said the officer.

Two persons who had introduced themselves as the directors of the company and were instrumental in opening the bank account have been arrested.

The police identified one of them as Manoj Behera, a resident of PK Guha Road in Dum Dum. He is originally from Odisha. The other accused has been identified as Mohammad Quis Ahmed, who is from Jharkhand. Behara was arrested on Wednesday from Sambalpur in Odisha, while Ahmed was arrested from a rented apartment in the Garden Reach area on Thursday. They have been sent to police custody till June 5.
