They have been charged under the IPC section on gang rape. The case was registered with Pragati Maidan police station on Monday.

The police identified the two accused as Chandan Gupta and Bikash Dutta.

An officer at the Kolkata police headquarters in Lalbazar said that according to the complaint, the 19-year-old girl left home with her friends and “took a vehicle that belonged to the brother of one of the men who was with her”.

“She was allegedly gang-raped inside that vehicle at a deserted location, which is under Pragati Maidan police station, between Sunday night and Monday morning,” said the officer.

The woman was dropped off at a location along EM Bypass. She lodged a complaint of gang rape with Pragati Maidan police station on Monday and named her alleged assaulters.

The woman’s medical examination was conducted at the NRS Medical College and Hospital.

The men who were arrested were also subjected to medical examinations. They were produced in a court on Tuesday and remanded in police custody.

The vehicle in which the alleged offence was committed has been seized by the police.

The police said a probe had been launched to find more details about the other accused and if anyone else was involved in the offence.

The alleged gang-rape was reported a few days after an almost similar incident. A 19-year-old college student had alleged that she had been given spiked drinks at a party and then gang-raped.

The police have arrested four men and detained a minor in connection with that case.

A senior officer involved in the probe into the complaint of gang rape lodged with Pragati Maidan police station said they would submit a prayer before the court to record the statement of the complainant before a magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC.

In the other case, the complainant had recorded her statement before a magistrate under Section 164.
