A truck transporting cement crashed into the wall of Bridge No. 4 in Park Circus early on Monday.

Police suspect that the driver dozed off and lost control of the steering wheel, resulting in the crash.

The driver escaped with minor injuries, a police officer said.

The crash was reported at 5.05am when almost no vehicles were on the stretch.

The truck, according to the officer, was heading towards a construction site in Topsia with cement bags.

“A major accident was averted as there were no other vehicles or pedestrians on the stretch. The crash happened on the Park Circus bridge which remains busy with cars, two-wheelers and slow-moving vehicles throughout the day. Luckily there were none when the crash happened,” said an officer of the traffic department.

Metro spoke to the owner of the truck, Abhishek Singh, who said the truck was carrying a consignment of cement from a godown and was to deliver it at a construction site in Topsia, not far from the place where the crash happened.

Entry of goods vehicles into the city is banned between 6am and 10pm.

The driver of the truck, whom police identified as Tun Tun Chandravanshi, received injuries and had to be given first aid.

“Chandravanshi was taken to a hospital where he was treated. Later he was brought to Karaya police station. As there was no loss of life or any injuries, he was released,” said an officer of the South-East division.

A traffic sergeant who visited the spot after the crash reported that no damage was caused to the pillars of the bridge.

According to a senior police officer, the reckless movement of trucks is one of the primary reasons behind accidents on the road.

“In this case, the truck was in a dilapidated state and did not damage the pillar of the bridge,” said the police officer.
