A three-year-old girl whose left hand was stuck between the steel plates of an escalator at a Howrah mall for two hours on Wednesday will undergo a second surgery.

“The left hand was seriously injured. The skin, muscles, nerves and tendons were ruptured. The first surgery on Thursday repaired some of this. More surgeries would be needed. One is on Saturday,” said Anupam Golash, plastic and vascular surgeon at CMRI Hospital, where the girl is admitted. “Mobility of the hand will be restored but not 100 per cent.”

The girl went to Avani Riverside Mall with her mother.

“She was playing and went near the escalator. There was no guard to stop her. Her hand got stuck between two steps. The escalator moved from the first to the ground floor in that condition,” said father Abdul Karim. “Her hand could be pulled out after two hours by police and firefighters.”

An official of the mall told The Telegraph: “We cooperated with the family to the best of our ability. It was an accident.”
