An IT professional returning home late on Friday died not far from his Behala home when a cement-laden lorry collided with his two-wheeler and crushed him under its wheels, police said. Ashok Kumar Nayak, 45, of P-94, Senhati Colony in Behala, was rushed to Vidyasagar State General Hospital where he was declared dead.

The vehicles were coming from opposite directions on Roy Bahadur Road close to midnight.

The driver left the lorry and fled after the accident.

“Technically, both vehicles were violating the night curfew. None of them were attached with any emergency service. The road was also relatively deserted and the accident appears to have been caused by faulty driving of either of the two vehicles. We are examining the footage from the CCTV cameras closest to the spot,” said an officer of the fatal squad of the traffic department.

According to the existing pandemic rules, no one except persons attached with emergency services or people in medical emergencies are to step out of their homes between 11pm and 5am, failing which pedestrians and motorists are prosecuted.

The police said they had impounded the lorry and contacted its owner but the driver was at large till Saturday evening.

Charges of causing death due to negligence and rash and negligent driving have been slapped against the driver. The lorry and the motorcycle will be subjected to mechanical tests to ascertain if they had developed any mechanical fault. Officers, who were the first to reach the spot when the accident was reported on Friday night, said they did not find a helmet on the spot.
