The superintendent of Presidency Correctional Home has been “cautioned” for allowing former minister Partha Chatterjee, now an undertrial prisoner, to wear rings inside the jail, which was brought to court's notice by an ED lawyer during a virtual hearing in April.
Chatterjee was found to be wearing three metal rings on April 19, following which the court had ordered an in-person appearance of the jail superintendent. After that the court ordered the additional director general of police (correctional services) to “initiate necessary action” against the superintendent.
The ADG has submitted a report in the Special CBI-I court. The report mentions that the jail superintendent has been “cautioned” and asked to “direct his subordinate officers to discharge duties more vigilantly and report any such incidents to the senior officers immediately so that prompt action can be taken in such matters,” said sources in the correctional services department.
The report also mentioned that Chatterjee was reportedly injured after he had forcibly removed the rings, said the sources.
“I accept the order of the honourable court with due respect. I accept the order of the superiors with due respect,” said the superintendent, Debasish Chakraborty.
