The ICSE council on Friday sent to its affiliated institutions a copy of the West Bengal education department’s order that summer vacation at government and government-aided schools will start on May 2.
The order by the education department on Thursday asked the state’s primary and secondary education boards to start the summer vacation in government and government-aided schools on May 2 “due to heat wave and prevailing situation”.
The summer vacation in these schools usually start around the third week of May.
The schools in the hill districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong will not have any early summer break.
The school education department had forwarded a copy of the order to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) and Central Board of Secondary Education for “information and suitable necessary action”.
The council has sent a circular addressed to the heads of all affiliated schools in the state and attached to it is a copy of the “self explanatory” order from the school education department.
Several schools affiliated to the CISCE said they are yet to take a decision.
“Since Friday was aholiday and the next two days are off, we will decide next week depending on the weather conditions,” a principal said.
Schools will hold internal meetings to decide whether they should announce early summer break.
“We will consult parents and take a decision after considering their feedback,” said Rodney Borneo, principal, St Augustine’s Day School, Shyamnagar.
“Due weightage will be given to the government’s circular that has been sent to us via the council,” said Sujoy Biswas, principal, Rammohan Mission High School.
Several private schools have suspended outdoor activities after 10am and children are being asked to stay indoors even during breaks.
