Students should be prepared for the possibility of multiple careers, said the dean of a private university in Delhi.

Partha Chatterjee, dean of academics and professor in the department of economics at Shiv Nadar University, Delhi NCR, cited the changing nature of jobs, the inability to predict the future, and an increased life expectancy as some of the reasons behind the idea.

“It is essential to prepare for the possibility that you will have multiple careers. This is because you never know. People are moving from corporate to academics, academics to corporate all the time,” said Chatterjee.

Moreover, increased life expectancy could mean one would work even after they are 60 or 70 years and an individual’s interest may change mid-way, he said.

“Your interest can change. Why would you want to do or keep on doing things you are no longer interested in?”

Chatterjee said that the university prepared them for multiple careers because they learn in great depth.

“The rigour helps students to understand how to go about learning something in great depth.”

Established in 2011, Shiv Nadar University has several students from Kolkata. It has opened admissions for the 2024-25 session.

The university is accepting applications to all programmes across its four schools in engineering, natural sciences, manage-ment and entrepreneurship, and humanities and social sciences.

“We see an overwhelming response from Kolkata,” said Chatterjee.
