The state higher secondary council has asked police to remove its camp from a school in Sandeshkhali in North 24-Parganas because it is a venue for the state higher secondary examinations, which start on February 16.

The police camp was set up last week at Radharani High School following a law and order crisis after women in the area alleged that Trinamul Congress leader Shajahan Sheikh and his henchmen had been harassing them for years.

The school in Sandeshkhali block-II is around 74km from Kolkata.

The school is a main venue of the HS exams. Which means students will write their papers at the school and council officials will coordinate with sub-venues from there.

Dip Barman, the headmaster of the school, said the police set up the camp on the campus on Friday night to curb tension in the area.

The camp has triggered questions among many how around 700 students from several schools will write their exams at Radharani High School.

The head of the school had approached the education department about the camp.

Chiranjeeb Bhattacharya, the president of the HS council, said on Monday evening: “I have requested the district police administration to withdraw the camp. They will act soon.”

A council official said Bhattacharya took stock of the situation at the school through a video call with the headmaster on Tuesday.

“The council president then contacted the district police administration and requested it to withdraw the police camp immediately,” said a council official.
