The officiating vice-chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University, Subhro Kamal Mukherjee, said he had been working from home since Monday because “employees have been entering into the office of the vice-chancellor and abusing the vice-chancellor repeatedly”.

In a letter to the university’s registrar and finance officer, Mukherjee has explained why he was unable to attend office.

On July 5, the governor had entrusted the former Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court with performing the duties of VC of RBU.

Mukherjee has written: “I direct the registrar to secure the administrative block of the university by strong iron grille so that no one can enter... without the permission from the authorities. The registrar is further directed to recruit a sufficient number of armed guards, preferably ex-servicemen....”

The officiating VC has also demanded the installation of CCTV cameras.

Mukherjee told The Telegraph: “Employees have been entering my office with their demands and abusing me repeatedly.”

Sandip Ganguly, president of the RBU unit of the state government employees’ federation, said: “The VC is trying to malign the staff.”
