A woman riding a scooter to her office was hit by a car from behind on the Salt Lake-bound flank of the Parama flyover on Saturday morning.
The car driver was apparently in a rush to reach the audition venue of a reality show, he told the woman.
Arpita Chatterjee, a Hazra Road resident, was hospitalised with multiple fractures in one of her legs.
She was going to her office in New Town when the accident happened around 10.25am on Saturday, the police said.
“A private car hit the scooterist from behind. The two-wheeler rider lost control and fell on its right. The scooterist was injured,” said an officer.
Arpita was wearing a helmet.
The driver was taken to the police station.
“Like the other days, my wife was on her scooter. She never speeds. Today, a car hit her from behind and she lost control,” said Arpita’s husband Sitangshu Chatterjee.
The driver of the car was a “young man” who said he was in a hurry to reach an audition venue, which prompted him to accelerate through a relatively less congested Parama flyover on Saturday morning, Sitangshu said.
“The police took him and the car to the police station for a general diary entry. But we did not lodge any formal complaint as the young man was very apologetic and has his whole career ahead of him,” he said.
Arpita, who works in a government office in New Town, was first taken to the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital from where she was shifted to a private hospital closer to her home, he said.
“Her right tibia (bone between knee and ankle) has suffered four fractures, which would need an operation,” he said.
The police said traffic on the city roads was relatively less on Saturday morning compared to other weekend mornings.
“Such accidents can be prevented if all motorists follow traffic signals and the prescribed speed limits,” said an officer.
Bike skids
A 49-year-old motorcyclist was injured after the two-wheeler skidded on Alipore Road on Friday evening. Ashok Kumar Dhar, a resident of Ramakrishna Sarani, was treated at a private hospital.
