Parents of a few students joined the agitating junior doctors at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital late Saturday afternoon while some interns resumed their work along with the post graduate trainees.
Sporting black badges in solidarity with the junior doctors who are still continuing the agitation, several interns joined work amidst efforts by the medical college authorities to get others to return to their classes ahead of their ensuing board examination.
The authorities on Friday had told the agitating students that 80 per cent of attendance would be required for theory classes and 75 per cent for practical classes to qualify for taking the board examination, conducted by the West Bengal Health University.
“The Covid numbers are on the rise and we hope that junior doctors and undergraduate students will return to their respective units and classes,” said a senior doctor. “We have assured them that most of their demands would be looked into.”
A section of the agitating students, though, have stuck to their demand for removal of the principal of the medical college. They alleged that the principal was ensuring they did not end up completing their MBBS course by being completely non-cooperative. The college administration has repeatedly told the agitating students that it was the health department that decided on who would be the principal of the college.
On Saturday evening some of the parents urged chief minister Mamata Banerjee to intervene to resolve the ongoing impasse.
“The deadlock can only be resolved if the chief minister intervenes,” said one of the parents of the agitating students.
A section of patients continued to suffer even on Saturday with doctors struggling to attend to everyone across all the departments including emergency and the outdoor patient's department.
