A three-storey shelter for the homeless has come up in Sukantanagar off EM Bypass in east Kolkata.

The shelter has the capacity to house over 60 people. It has been designed keeping in mind the needs of the elderly and specially-abled, said a senior official of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

The KMC has jointly built the shelter with the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM) scheme.

On Tuesday, urban development and municipal affairs minister Firhad Hakim along with state fire and emergency services minister Sujit Bose and BMC mayor Krishna Chakraborty inaugurated the building. Bose is the Bidhannagar MLA.

“We have designed and constructed this shelter so people who have no roofs over their heads and spend their nights in the open can have some semblance of comfort. We will provide free meals and regular consultations with doctors,” Hakim said at the opening.
