Debjani Mukherjee, an accused in multiple cheating cases related to the Saradha default scam, stepped out of jail for the first time in 10 years on Sunday to meet her ailing mother.

Mukherjee, who has been in custody since her arrest on April 22, 2013, was granted a six-hour parole to meet her mother, officials in the state correctional services department said.

Mukherjee, lodged at Dum Dum jail, reached their 1 Mukherjee Para Lane home in Dhakuria around noon in a prison van. She entered her home around 12.05pm and left around 6pm, to be escorted back to the jail.

A team of officers from Kasba police station accompanied Mukherjee.

“Mukherjee had filed a prayer seeking parole to meet her ailing mother, who was admitted to hospital in May. The prayer was granted, following which Dum Dum jail officers wrote to Kolkata police seeking escort for the movement of the undertrial,” said an officer.

Mukherjee has 32 criminal cases pending against her, of which she has secured bail in only three.

Asked about her visit, she told reporters outside her home that she had come to visit her mother and would not comment on anything else.
