More than Rs 4 lakh was siphoned off from the account of a couple in Kestopur after they received a call from a person posing as the manager of a private bank and asking them to update their Know Your Customer (KYC) documents online, police said.

The cops, however, managed to trace the amount and return it to Malobika Saha Naskar and Tapan Naskar.

An officer of Bidhannagar commissionerate said Malobika lodged a complaint at airport police station stating that a call came to her husband Tapan’s number where the caller identified himself as an official of a private bank where they have a joint account.

“The caller told the woman that she needed to update the KYC documents,” he said

He then told her that if she did not update the KYC documents their account would be frozen.

The man sent a link and told Malobika that she needed to upload the KYC documents such as Aadhaar, PAN and debit cards after opening the link, the officer added.

“She followed the caller’s instructions and updated all the details,” the officer said.

A few days later, when her husband visited the bank, he found that Rs 4.14 lakh had been debited from the account through various transactions.

Realising that they have been duped he lodged a police complaint.

The cops probing the case could trace that the entire amount had been transferred to another bank account.

“Fraudsters dupe people by transferring money into e-wallets and bank accounts opened with fake documents. This makes it difficult to trace. In this case, we could freeze the account and return the money,” said joint commissioner (headquarters), Bidhannagar city police, Badana Varun Chandrasekhar.
