The recent flower show at DC Park was a riot of colours. Organised by the Bidhannagar Horticultural Society, in association with Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, the show had categories for various kinds of flowers as well as fruits, herbal plants, palms and crotons. Besides individual participants, some institutions had sent entries too.
Mithu Paul’s pots of Marigolds were a sight for sore eyes. “The weather has been erratic this winter so some plants, like my Petunias, haven’t turned out as well. If it had got colder in November and December the Marigolds would have been even bigger in size,” said the CG Block resident who won the first prize in annuals
“This is the second time that we held the show in this park and the experience has been great. The timing, however, clashed with the book fair, so perhaps some visitors had to choose one over the other. But the park was spacious and the location strategic and we may want to return here next year,” said secretary Goutam Kumar Paul.
This sections had gourds, cucumbers, tomatoes, brinjals and lots several other varieties. Achyut Ghosh had brought cauliflower, cabbage, and ol kopi. “I wanted others to see that these vegetables can be grown in eight or 10-inch pots in your terrace. And the produce will feed not just their family but those of two or three more neighbours," said the BC Block resident.
“I fell in love with bonsais after reading about them years ago. These plants are gifted to families at weddings in Japan. I started dabbling with bonsais as a stress buster and realised it’s a game of patience. The lockdown period turned out to be a blessing in disguise as I got to spend a lot of time perfecting them,” said Rajat Boobna.
