The Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) have sought additional time to complete the construction of a pillar for the New Garia-airport Metro corridor at the busy Chingrighata intersection on EM Bypass, officials said.

The 30-day period that was originally allotted to finish the construction ends on June 17.

RVNL, implementing agency of the project, have told Kolkata police that they would need almost a fortnight more after the deadline to finish work, police officers said.

The agency, which functions under the railway ministry, has cited the challenges involved in erecting a pillar at the busy intersection while seeking additional time for the work.

“RVNL engineers have said they need more time to complete the construction. In the meantime, they will be in a position to reduce the barricade at the intersection by a metre each on either side of the median divider after the foundation work is over,” said an officer of Kolkata police

“That will ensure additional road space on either side of the Chingrighata crossing for vehicular movement.”

RVNL officials said the pillar is coming up at a crucial point on the New Garia-airport Metro route as the viaduct, on which the tracks will be laid, will curve towards Salt Lake at the intersection.

The work, which was held up for over two years, finally began on May 17 after police conducted a series of traffic trials.

“The work of piling began the day we were handed the site and there has been no loss of working days since. Several challenges are involved in the construction of the pillar,” an RVNL official said.
