The officiating vice-chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University, who has been working from home lately following protests from employees there, has now been given additional charge of Presidency University.
Bengal governor C.V. Ananda Bose, the ex-officio chancellor of state-aided universities, appointed Subhro Kamal Mukherjee as the officiating vice-chancellor of Presidency University.
Presidency was without a vice-chancellor after the extended tenure of Anuradha Lohia came to an end in mid-June this year.
The names of officiating vice-chancellors were announced in 16 state-aided universities, which included Presidency.
Mukherjee, a former chief justice of Karnataka High Court, stopped going to RBU’s main campus on BT Road on July 27.
He has asked his office to raise an iron grille and engage armed security guards in the administrative block to protect him from the protesting employees at RBU.
Mukherjee went to the Presidency University on College Street on Monday afternoon.
When Metro sought to know how he would helm another campus, given what he encountered at RBU, officiating vice-chancellor Mukherjee said: “Let me first go and see.”
Towards the end of her tenure, his predecessor Lohia would hardly come to the College Street campus so she did not have to face protests over the hostel and other issues from students.
Education minister Bratya Basu said on the Assembly premises on Monday that it was not clear to him why the same person was being asked to helm multiple institutions at the same time.
On Thursday, the chancellor asked the officiating vice-chancellor of Sanskrit College and University to officiate as the vice-chancellor of West Bengal State University, Barasat.
An RBU official said Mukherjee would be sitting at the university’s Jorasanko campus from Tuesday.
