The young man who fell to his death from Quest mall's sixth-floor parking lot on Thursday was a law student and former St James' School prefect.
Mohammad Aiman Rauf, 22, had left his Broad Street home saying he was going out with his friends, his family has told police.
The police said it was later found that he did not go to his friends and was last seen wandering in the parking lot of the shopping mall, not far from his house.
"The CCTV footage and the statement of the security guard at the parking lot of the Quest reveals that Rauf had been loitering around the parking lot for some time before the guard asked where his car was parked. When he said that he did not have a car parked there, the guard asked him to go inside the mall and left the spot. After some time, Rauf was found lying on the ground floor, apparently after he fell from the parking lot," said an officer of the southeast division.
Rauf, who was pursuing a law course, had completed school at St James' in 2019. He was a prefect. A teacher on Friday said he had been chosen for his "exemplary behaviour".
"He used to love playing cricket," one of his cousins, also a senior in school, said.
"He was well-behaved, soft-spoken and disciplined. He was elected as prefect of the school because of his exemplary behaviour," said Joseph Chacko, a senior English teacher who taught him.
Rauf's body underwent post-mortem on Friday. The police on Friday evening said they had yet to get a preliminary opinion on the cause of the death.
The police said they had not received any complaint from the family till Friday evening.
One of Rauf's elder cousins said the family was "not in a position to talk".
"According to a relative's statement, Rauf last spoke to a family member around 9.30pm when he said he was on Parama flyover. He did not receive calls after that," an investigator said.
The police said they had yet to find out if he actually went to the flyover.
