Police have arrested two men in connection with the theft at the Gariahat residence of Trinamul Congress councillor Sudarshana Mukherjee on May 29.

The police said Sunil Maity — the prime suspect — was arrested last week after his face was identified with the help of footage of multiple CCTV cameras in the Ballygunge neighbourhood where Mukherjee lives.

The cops scanned footage of multiple cameras to track the route through which Maity had fled after the alleged theft, officers said.

He apparently boarded a south-bound bus from the Gariahat crossing, the officers said.

Based on the information, the police arrested him from a location in Taratala.

Acting on Maity’s statement, the police conducted a raid in Behala on Sunday and arrested Tapan Dhali, who “received” the items.

The police have recovered a gold ornament, which was among the articles stolen from Mukherjee’s house.
