A 28-year-old man who was returning home from work died after a wooden panel came off a window and fell on his head during the squall that hit the city on Tuesday night.
The incident happened on Rabindra Sarani, a congested artery, around 8.30pm, police said.
The victim has been identified as Kurban Mandal, a resident of Amta in Howrah.
He used to work as a carpenter in a furniture shop in central Kolkata, the police said.
Mandal was taken to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries early on Thursday, the police said.
The police said the wooden window was open on the second floor of a residential building when the squall, which clocked 59kmph, hit the city.
“We have not found any negligence of the owner of the house. It was an accident,” said an officer of Hare Street police station, where an unnatural death case has been registered.
Kurban, like on any other day, was walking along Rabindra Sarani to catch a bus to Howrah on Tuesday evening when the accident occurred, the police said.
The victim’s family did not lodge any complaint till late on Wednesday.
Kolkata has witnessed incidents involving fall of traffic signal posts, trees and lamp posts during squalls and thunderstorms in the last few weeks.
“Tuesday’s incident, during which a wooden panel of a window came off and killed a pedestrian, was unusual,” said an officer.
Complete courses: NUJS told
A division bench of the high court on Tuesday held that online courses at the National Institute of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) will have to be completed for the students who have already enrolled for them.
The division bench of Justice I.P. Mukerji and Justice S. Samanta, said in the order: “…we direct that the students who have already enrolled themselves for the online courses from 2012 and not completed them should be allowed to complete the courses if otherwise entitled to do so.”
“On successful completion of the courses they would be awarded the requisite degrees and diplomas by the university deemed to have been issued with the approval of the UGC,” the order added.
The division bench said new admission in those courses will need the UGC’s approval.
