Pavements across Salt Lake will be repaired with new interlocking paver blocks before Durga Puja.

The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, in charge of maintaining pavements in all three Salt Lake sectors, will launch a survey this week to identify broken stretches of footpaths, an official of the civic body said on Tuesday.

In the survey, councillors and teams from the civic body will go around blocks to identify broken footpaths that need repairs, the official said.

The Telegraph has reported on several occasions how the roads of the township are riddled with potholes. In several places, pavements, too, are in a shambles.

Many pavements in Salt Lake have fast food stalls, leaving no space for pedestrians. But even on stretches where there are no stalls, residents have to walk on broken pavements.

"We want to identify the stretches and then start repairs on a priority basis. We will start with the areas around the big-ticket pujas, such as Labony Estate, and FD, AJ, AE and BE Blocks," said the official.

On Tuesday, The Telegraph spotted many places where the pavements were dug up for pipeline- or cable-laying work. But paver blocks were also broken on some stretches where no work is underway

A stretch of a pavement along the eastern drainage canal is one of the worst affected and paver blocks are completely missing in many places.

Similar repairs will be done in Baguiati, Kestopur and parts of Rajarhat, which fall under the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, the official said.
