A footpath near the SDF intersection in Sector V that was broken for several months will be repaired and relaid with new paver blocks.
The SDF crossing is one of the busiest intersections in Sector V as vehicles headed from EM Bypass through Chingrighata enter Sector V through it.
According to a senior officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate, more than 60 per cent of the traffic volume headed to Sector V enters through SDF intersection.
The stretch of pavement that will be repaired had been dug up to facilitate the laying of pipelines and underground cables. It had remained in a dug-up state for several months, said a senior official of the Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA), which provides civic services to Sector V.
Pedestrians have stopped using the pavement and are forced to walk on the main road that remains busy throughout the day.
Buses pick up passengers at the SDF crossing. Those who want to board buses now strand on the main road as vehicles whiz past them.
“The pavement is in an area that is extremely busy and because of its current state it has been rendered useless, forcing people to walk on the main road and wait for buses and autorickshaws on the road. This is risky and we want to repair the pavement at the earliest,” the NDITA official said.
Work is expected to start this month.
Many pavements in Sector V have sprawls of bambooand plastic stalls that sell fast food, cigarettes and paan. These stalls have rendered sidewalks in the township useless.
However, this stretch of pavement in Sector V had remained free of such encroachments, primarily because the main road witnesses a high volume of traffic and vehicles cannot stop and park to go to the shops.
Repeated attempts by the civic authority to relocate the stalls to hawking zones and a food court at the Sector V parking lot, opposite the Positional Astronomy Centre, have failed.
