A critically injured patient who was at the centre of a row between Trinamul MLA Madan Mitra and SSKM after the hospital said it could not admit him for want of beds died at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday.
Subhadip Pal, 24, a lab technician at the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, had met with an accident on Thursday.
“Pal had suffered multiple injuries, including one on his head and a laceration injury in the right eye. His right chest was nearly crushed and his right kidney was severely affected,” said Anjan Adhikari, vice-principal of the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. “Before he was admitted to our hospital, the patient suffered two massive heart attacks.”
Mitra said: “I know doctors and nurses at Calcutta Medical College tried their best. It’s destiny. I pray for the departed soul.”
On Saturday, Mitra had alleged that doctors at SSKM Hospital refused to examine Pal.
The director of the Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research at SSKM, Monimoy Banerjee, had said: “The patient was examined. They were told there was no bed. They came back a second time when a medical officer again explained to them that SSKM was not in a position to admit someone who was on ventilator support in another hospital.”
Pal was first admitted to the Institute of Neurosciences, where he was on ventilator support. Mitra said Pal’s family approached him on Friday saying they could not afford the expenses at the institute. Mitra asked them to take Pal to SSKM. Denied admission there, he was taken to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.
Mitra had earlier alleged that touts were calling the shots at SSKM.
Asked about the SSKM episode on Tuesday, he declined to comment.
