Passenger detained at Kolkata airport after US$40,000 found in gutka packets

A person scheduled to board a Bangkok-bound flight has been detained from the Kolkata airport on Monday, after US$40,000 was found hidden inside gutka packets seized from his possession.

Acting on spot intelligence, the passenger was detained at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport following a security check of his checked-in baggage.

“Further investigation is underway,” the officer said.

Cash haul

Three men have been arrested on Strand Road in west Kolkata for alleged illegal possession of Rs 43.5 lakh on Monday evening. The men could not explain the source of the money, police said. The three have been identified as Bimal Ojha, Aman Tiwary and Vimal Kumar.
