One of the two children injured on Friday afternoon when a car climbed a footpath along Maniktala Main Road died on Saturday.
A section of residents took to the road and set up a blockade after the news of the death reached the neighbourhood.
Seven-year-old Ankit Shaw had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital off EM Bypass since Friday afternoon.
The car allegedly dragged him almost 10 feet before it hit a tree and came to a halt.
The police said doctors treating Ankit told them he had suffered multiple injuries, including one on his head.
On Friday night, Ankit was shifted to the hospital’s intensive care unit after his condition started to deteriorate. He passed away on Saturday morning.
Neighbours said Ankit was the youngest of four siblings and was a nursery student.
Ankit’s body was taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem.
The body was handed to the family later on Saturday.
On Maniktala Main Road, the agitating residents said there was scant policing in the area despite the stretch being accident-prone. A section of motorists tend to speed down the road when traffic is relatively light in the afternoon, they alleged.
The road connects EM Bypass with Kankurgachhi.
The other injured child, a nine-year-old girl, is in hospital. She has suffered a fracture in one of her ribs and blood has accumulated inside her head, the police said quoting doctors. She is scheduled to undergo surgery on Monday.
Tapan Ghosh, 50, who was also injured when the Maruti Suzuki Swift crashed through guard rails and landed on the footpath close to Maniktala Byam Samity, suffered minor injuries and did not need hospitalisation.
The police said the driver, Abhishek Sultania, 38, has been arrested. The car is registered under his father’s name.
Abhishek is a resident of GD Block in Salt Lake. His father, Ashok Sultania, passed away a few years back, the police said.
Abhishek told the police during interrogation that he had dozed off while driving on Maniktala Main Road on Friday afternoon.
The car swerved suddenly and crashed through the guardrails, a police officer who has spoken to passersby said.
Following Ankit’s death on Saturday, a fresh case was drawn up and Abhishek was charged under Section 304 (Part II) of the IPC, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
“He has also been charged with attempt to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash and negligent driving, mischief, and rash and negligent act endangering human life,” said a senior officer of the Phoolbagan police station.
