Two men in their late 20s were killed and a third was critically injured after their motorcycle crashed into the divider of the Major Arterial Road’s service lane in front Eco Park in New Town early on Thursday.

The men, from Sulanguri in Rajarhat, were riding towards the airport. “Prasad Majumder, 20, lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into the median divider in front of Eco Park’s Mishti Hub,” an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said.

Majumder and Linton Bairagi, 30, were flung off the two-wheeler. They crashed into the divider head first, the officer said.

The motorcycle dragged along the third man, Santu Majumder, for at least 100m.

None of the three was wearing a helmet, the officer said.

“The bike was moving at a high speed. Tyre marks suggest the rider had tried to slam the brakes at the last minute after getting dangerously close to the divider and lost control before ramming into it,” the officer said.

Prasad and Linton suffered head injuries and were lying in a pool of blood when a police team reached the spot. They were taken to a government-run hospital nearby where doctors declared them dead on arrival.

“The men were unconscious when they were brought here. They had lost a lot of blood from their head injuries and we could not revive them,” a doctor said.

The third pillion rider is admitted to the hospital in a critical state, the doctor added.

The MAR, a 10.5km-long artery, is a six-lane thoroughfare. Bikers racing down New Town streets are a common sight late at night and early in the morning, residents said.
