As cherry blossoms start blooming in Japan, the consulate general of Japan is organising a series of programmes in the city in celebration.
As a part of the Japan Talkies line-up, a clutch of Japanese films with English subtitles will be screened at Nazrul Tirtha on March 26 and 27.
There will be four films on offer on Day 1. While Oshin at 3pm and The Scythian Lamb at 5.50pm are feature films, there will be two short films in between, including an animated one at 5.25pm on a child’s life and journey with a pet dog.
On Day 2, there will be five films, starting with Nobody to Watch Over Me at 3pm. It is a drama depicting the distress of a family of a juvenile criminal and the conflicts of the detective ordered to protect them. This will be followed by three short films, with the concluding feature film, Tremble All You Want, starting at 6.20pm. This is a romantic comedy adopted from a novel by the same name by Wataya Risa. It tells the story of a heroine terrified of love as she rediscovers her true self.
“After a long hiatus, the current situation has allowed us to organise an in-person Japanese film festival at two locations, Nazrul Tirtha in New Town and Nandan in central Kolkata. Through this festival, I hope people will develop deeper understanding about Japan, and also enjoy a slice of Japanese culture,” said consul general Yutaka Nakamura.
The screening is free, with seats available on first-come-first-served basis.
