A mother and daughter were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly blackmailing a 60-year-old man by threatening to circulate pictures of his “intimate moments” with the older woman whose daughter is said to have clicked them.
The women, who allegedly planned the operation — starting from striking friendship on social media to clicking photographs and recording videos — allegedly demanded Rs 15 lakh of which the victim had paid Rs 2 lakh.
Based on the complaint of the elderly man, police have arrested the mother in her 40s and her daughter who is in her 20s. “We received a complaint on Tuesday that the man, who is from Barrackpore, had befriended a woman on social media and gone to meet her at her Narendrapur home. Just when he was about to get intimate with the woman, her daughter and another person had barged into the room and started threatening to defame him if he did not pay Rs 15 lakh. The demand was scaled down to Rs 4 lakh. He managed to pay Rs 2 lakh there itself through an online transaction,” said superintendent of police, Baruipur police directorate, Vaibhav Tiwari.
He said after coming out of the house the man confided in his son over the phone, who advised him to go to the cops. The man reported the matter at Narendrapur police station.
The police arrested the mother and the daughter but the man who was allegedly with them, is missing. They were produced before Barui-pur court on Wednesday. The woman was granted bail while her daughter was sent in judicial remand.
Mohit Mollah, deputy superintendent of police (enforcement branch), Baruipur police district said they were trying to find out if they had cheated anyone else before.
