Metro services were disrupted because of a suicide bid by a man and his wife at MG Road station on Tuesday afternoon.

The couple jumped in front of a Dakshineswar-bound train at 2.27pm, a Metro official said.

“The driver applied the emergency brakes. A power block was taken immediately. The two persons were rescued from the tracks and sent to hospital,” said the official.

While the rescue was on, the carrier ran truncated services between New Garia and Maidan, and Dakshineswar and Dum Dum.

Services on the entire stretch resumed at 2.58pm.

Suicide bids often disrupt Metro services. But more than one person jumping together in front of a train is unusual, said officials.

The couple are being treated at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, police said.

The two lived in East Midnapore and had moved to the woman’s maternal home in north Kolkata to look after her ailing parents, said the police.

Tuesday’s disruption tormented thousands of passengers. Some trains were stranded on the tracks and passengers inside alleged there were no announcements from the carrier.
