Another wet spell is headed Kolkata’s way.

The “likely formation of a wind discontinuity over Jharkhand and adjoining areas and moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal” is expected to trigger “rainfall activity over the districts of Bengal” between January 30 and February 2, said a bulletin issued by the Met office on Monday.

In Kolkata, rain is “not ruled out” on Tuesday, and “likely” on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday,” said a Met official.

The winter has seen more than one rainy spell in the city. The overcast conditions have pushed the minimum temperature up but dragged the maximum temperature down. On a couple of days, the Met office recorded a maximum temperature of under 20 degrees.

Such days have been damp, dark, dreary and unusually cold.

“When it rains in Kolkata, the minimum temperature is likely to go up to around 16 degrees. But the maximum may come down to around 22 degrees,” said G.K. Das, director, IMD, Kolkata.

“A trough is likely to take shape over Jharkhand. It will be a convergence of northwesterly winds from Kashmir and southeasterly winds from the Bay. As a result, clouds will take shape over Jharkhand and make their way towards Bengal. The clouds are expected to bring rain to Kolkata,” he said.

In Kolkata, the Celsius is on the rise. On Sunday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were 23.7 degrees and 12.9 degrees, respectively. Both readings were a couple of notches below normal.

On Monday, the maximum and minimum were 25.4 and 13.6 degrees, respectively, both a notch below normal.

After the wet spell abates, another drop in the minimum temperature is likely.
