Another wet spell is looming over Bengal, the Met office said on Tuesday.

In Kolkata, there is a possibility of light rain between Wednesday evening and Thursday night, said a Met official.

“Because of the presence of an upper-air trough from east Madhya Pradesh to Jharkhand and moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal, rainfall activity is likely over the districts of Bengal from February 13 to 15,” a Met bulletin said.

While a “thunderstorm with light to moderate rain” is expected across south Bengal on Wednesday, just “light to moderate” rainfall is likely across the districts on Thursday, the bulletin said.

“The maximum impact will be on Bankura, Purulia, Birbhum, East and West Burdwan and Nadia,” said a Met official.

In Kolkata, the sky, which had been clear and sunny for the past few days, turned cloudy on Tuesday. The next two days are unlikely to see a consistently clear and sunny sky.

“The moisture from the Bay of Bengal will travel towards Jharkhand and lead to the formation of rain-bearing clouds. The clouds will move across the districts of Bengal and trigger rain,” said a Met official.

A system closer to the surface is usually stronger than one in the upper atmosphere. But this time of the year, a cyclonic circulation or a trough usually takes shape in the upper atmosphere, said the official. During late summer or monsoon, they are closer to the surface, he added.

The Celsius in Kolkata is also on the rise. From 14.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday, the minimum rose to 18.6 degrees on Tuesday.

Met officials linked the rise in Celsius to a rise in moisture incursion.
