The police said many of her friends told them that she had shared her anxiety about studies and was unable to cope with the stress.

“According to some of her classmates, she had told them that she was finding it difficult to cope with the stress of her studies. We have also learned that she was undergoing treatment,” said an officer of Beniapukur police station, where an unnatural death case has been started.

According to Souvik Ghosh, who is one year senior to Pradipta, they came to know about the incident around 5pm. “Pradipta returned to her room around 4pm. Her roommate went outside to have food. When Pradipta did not respond, the roommate raised an alarm. We all rushed to the room and pushed open the door. She was hanging from the ceiling fan,” said Ghosh, who helped to bring her down.

The police said Pradipta is originally from Sodepur in North 24-Paraganas district. Youngest in her family, Pradipta is survived by her parents and an elder sibling. Her father is a retired police officer.

The body was taken to the morgue of NRS Medical College and Hospital where it would undergo post-mortem on Tuesday. The cops said they did not receive any specific complaint from the family till Monday night.
