The mayoral council of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on Friday approved nearly Rs 4 crore for the restoration of two roads — Kali Krishna Tagore Street in Burrabazar and a stretch of Cossipore Road in north Kolkata.
Both the roads have been in a battered state for the past few months, sources said. The undulated surface of both roads results in uncomfortable and risky rides.
A senior KMC official said they would remove the undulated stretches and relay them.
The repairs will be undertaken on a nearly one km stretch of Cossipore Road, between the Cossipore Road and Jheel Road crossing and the Chitpore bridge to the south.
“A work to lay underground drainage lines was completed about a month ago, but the road has been lying in a broken condition since then. The pipe-laying work was done along one side of the road but the other side was also damaged badly,” said a Cossipore resident.
The KMC official said they have chosen a contractor to carry out a thorough repair. “We will probably start after Puja. Some patchwork could be done before Puja,” said the official.
The work will take a few months, he added. Sources said there were demands from local people for urgent repair of the road. The traffic police too has raised the issue of repair of the road with the KMC.
Kali Krishna Tagore Street, above which once ran the Vivekananda flyover, has not been repaired since the demolition of the structure.
Meena Devi Purohit, councillor of Ward 22, which covers parts of Kali Krishna Tagore Street, had raised the subject of the poor condition of the road several times during the monthly meeting of councillors. “The road was badly broken along its edges. Even in some places, portions nearer to the middle of the road are also broken,” she told The Telegraph on Friday.
A KMC official said they were planning to start repairs on Kali Krishna Tagore Street before Puja. The work would take some time to complete.
