A teacher of English at Maulana Azad College in central Kolkata, missing since Monday night, was found dead near the railway tracks at Ultadanga station in the city’s northeastern part on Tuesday.
Abhijit Sharma Roy, 51, was taken to hospital where he was declared dead. It seems he was hit by a train, police said. The cops did not find any note on Roy.
Roy, who was head of the English department at the college, left his home in Dum Dum Cantonment around 7pm on Monday. Police sources said he would walk daily from 7pm to 9pm. “When he failed to return even at 10pm, his family filed a missing person report,” said an officer.
Around 11am on Tuesday, the Government Railway Police found Roy’s body.
“Prima facie, it seems he was run over by a train. He was not carrying his phone. Nor did we find any note on him. An investigation is on,” said an officer at the GRP.
Colleagues said Roy had been teaching at Maulana Azad College for over six years. He had started his teaching career at Haldia Government College and also taught at Chandernagore Government College and Darjeeling Government College.
“He was articulate but soft-spoken. He was very polite and popular among students,” said Subhasis Dutta, principal of Maulana Azad College.
Roy’s wife teaches chemistry at a government school and their son studies in Delhi.
