Four persons who had allegedly fled the city after the death of a 47-year-old motor mechanic in Maniktala after Diwali, were arrested from a hotel at Tarapith in Birbhum district on Monday morning.
Police said the four — who are residents of Narkeldanga and Maniktala — have been arrested in connection with the death of Anil Razak on November 15.
Razak, a motor mechanic by profession, had complained of abdominal pain after which he was admitted to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where he was declared dead.
“Initially Razak's family did not lodge any complaint as the victim himself had apparently not shared anything about any assault with his family as he was in a state of intoxication. He had not even been able to tell about the exact nature of injuries he had,” said an officer of Maniktala police station.
However, after his death, his colleagues and neighbours who apparently saw a scuffle over the distribution of bhog at a Kali Puja pandal in Maniktala on Diwali night, informed his family that Razak was beaten up by a group of men.
“Thereafter, the family lodged a complaint with the police station naming two persons. On detailed investigation, it was found that the victim was beaten up by several men. The post-mortem report also mentioned fatal injuries on him.
The cops launched a search for the accused.
“The accused men were found hiding in a lodge at Tarapith in Birbhum district. They were arrested early on Monday morning,” said the officer.
The police identified the accused as Subhash Dey alias Sukumar of Bagmari Road, Sanjib Nag of Canal East Road, Ahhijit Dey of Narkeldanga North Road and Shiba Santra of Manicktala Main Road.
The four have been charged under sections of common intention and culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the India Penal Code.
The charges carry a maximum punishment of 10 years in jail.
