A man was found dead in a rented apartment in Bansdroni with a pillow on his face on Wednesday morning. His younger brother walked into a police station and “confessed” to have killed him, officers said.

Later, the police found the man was not murdered but had died of a brain haemorrhage.

“The man, who is unemployed, told us that his elder brother had told him that after his death he should go to the police and claim that he had killed him. That would lead to his arrest and ensure him a square meal,” said an officer.

The police said they had learnt that the two brothers, who had shifted to a rented house at Niranjan Pally in Bansdroni one-and-a-half months ago, used to live in an apartment with their mother till her death a few months ago.

“Their mother was a central government employee. The elder son, who had lost his eyesight, had a monthly income of Rs 15,000. He had been unwell since their mother’s death and realised that there would be no one to take care of his younger brother after his death,” said the officer.
