A man has been arrested from East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand for allegedly creating a fake website in the West Bengal Public Service Commission’s (PSC) name using forged documents.

Officers of Cyber Crime police station of Kolkata police, where a complaint was lodged against the website, said it had been created in November last year. The accused person has been identified as Tarun Nayak.

Nayak, 25, is originally from West Bengal and shifted to Jharkhand with his family at an early age, the police said. He has told the police that he had worked for a software firm in Hyderabad.

“During the investigation, we came to know the name and address of a person who had created the website. But on further scrutiny, we found that the mobile numbers mentioned as that of the creator did not match with the name and address mentioned there,” said an officer in Lalbazar.

The police said both mobile numbers mentioned in the website’s database were issued against fake documents. “The accused was tracked down with the IMEI details of the phone sets that had the SIM cards,” the officer said. “He had put the name and address of someone else to mask his identity.”

Nayak was arrested early on Wednesday from a location in the Kadma police station area in Jharkhand’s East Singhbum district. “We decided to raid the place based on digital evidence,” the officer said.

The gadgets Nayak had allegedly used for the offence have been seized.

“Nayak said he had been unemployed since leaving his job at a software firm in Hyderabad. So he came up with the idea to create a fake website of the West Bengal Public Service Commission to earn some money by cheating people,” another officer said.

Kolkata police started the probe following a complaint lodged by an official of the public service commission against the fake website.

The police said they were probing the gadgets allegedly used by Nayak to find out details of the persons he might have cheated.
