A platform of former students of Jadavpur University that has been raising funds to help their alma mater tide over a cash crunch has now decided to help students by offering summer internships.
The Global Jadavpur University Alumni Foundation, headquartered in the US, will offer students from the computer science department, internships in the areas of building intelligent web applications with Artificial Intelligence.
An office bearer of the foundation said successful applicants would be provided an internship that includes financial support in the form of a stipend of Rs 10,000 a month, funded by the foundation, for three months.
“The project will span 12 weeks and will be administered at the JU campus under the supervision of a professor from an American university”, he said.
According to him, by the end of the summer, students who will undergo the internship, are expected to “develop a strong understanding of what is known as full stack web development, as well as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning”, and will be able to apply their skills to real-world applications.
During the internship, the students will be imparted lessons in writing clean, efficient, and well-documented codes, testing and debugging codes to ensure the application is functioning correctly.
“Students will also take part in code reviews to ensure the quality of code and will continuously learn and improve their skills in full-stack web development,” said Ranjit Chakravorti, the president of the foundation, who graduated in chemical engineering from JU in 1961.
During the internship, he said, Students would work remotely with a small team in Silicon Valley under the guidance of a professor from San Jose State University.
“The professor will supervise their work and provide regular feedback through virtual meetings, email, and other forms of online communication,” said Chakravorti.
Ujjwal Maulik, a professor of the computer science department at Jadavpur University, said the internship project was a welcome development, as it will ensure additional exposure for students.
“These days AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) is also emphasising on providing additional exposure to students. Our syllabus may not cover everything. The additional exposure is expected to take them beyond the syllabus and learn newer applications,” he said.
Chiranjeeb Bhattacharya, pro-vice-chancellor and the former dean of engineering and technology faculty, said the summer internship was a “great opportunity for computer science students” that will give them hands-on experience in advanced areas like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
