The son of Francis Derozio, a Christian Indo-Portuguese office worker, and Sophia Johnson Derozio, an Englishwoman, Derozio was highly influenced by the English Romantic poets. In 1826, Derozio was appointed as instructor at Hindu College and his teaching influenced students hugely. Long after his early death in 1831, his legacy lived on among his former students and they were known as Young Bengal
