The team probing the death of IIT Kharagpur student Faizan Ahmed on Saturday went to the hostel room where he was found dead last year and collected samples of blood stains in the presence of his mother.

Faizan’s family members said the team also collected a bucket containing the residue of a chemical that lawyers representing the family had earlier told Calcutta High Court was used to preserve the body after death.

The team collected a T-shirt of Faizan from the room.

The team prepared an inventory of his belongings.

A forensic examination will be conducted on some of the belongings, said his mother Rehana Ahmed.

A member of the special investigation team said the belongings, which include clothes, a broken laptop and its accessories, would be returned to the family after the forensic examination.

“We are bound to return the belongings to the family after the examination is over. We could not talk to any student as they are on vacation. Their statement is crucial,” a member of the probe team said.

Rehana, Faizan’s aunt Salma and their lawyer Aniruddha Mitra accompanied the investigation team to the hostel room on the Kharagpur campus.

Rehana told The Telegraph: “We saw the team collecting samples of the blood stains from the room. They collected the bucket containing the residue of a chemical and a T-shirt that had many stains.”

She broke down in tears when she stepped into the room where Faizan was found dead on October 14 last year.

“I sent my son to study at IIT Kharagpur but he was lost here,” Rehana said.

She later went to the Rajendra Prasad Hall of Residence where Faizan stayed before shifting to the Lala LajpatRai hall in February 2022,allegedly without intimating the hall management authorities.

Rehana alleged her son was murdered by senior students because he dared to resist ragging.

Justice Rajasekhar Mantha of Calcutta High Court in his order on April 25 had written: “Sandip Bhattacharya, (Amicus Curae of forensic medicine expert Ajay Kumar Gupta, who carried out the second postmortem on the remains of Faizan Ahmed following an exhumation of the body at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital morgue in late May) has placed seizure report of the police dated 17th November 2022 which indicates that a chemical called Emplura (sodium nitrate) in a bottle has been seized from the scene of the crime.

“It is submitted by Mr Bhattacharya that sodium nitrate a yellowish powder is normally used to preserve meat. There is some yellowish residue in a bucket found by Dr. Gupta and Mr. Bhattacharyya during his visit to the room.”
