The septuagenarian woman whose body was found in the washroom of her Salt Lake home on Wednesday morning had suffered multiple sharp and blunt injuries that caused her death, police said on Thursday, referring to the post-mortem findings.

“According to the preliminary post-mortem report, the woman, in her 70s, suffered several sharp cuts and blunt injuries. The blunt injuries could be because of her fall on the ground or the impact of collisions with walls,” said an officer of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate.

Based on a complaint lodged by one of the two daughters of the victim, the police have started a murder case against the woman’s octogenarian husband, who is now in hospital with multiple injuries, which officers suspect may be self-inflicted.

“The 84-year-old man, who killed his wife and then possibly attempted suicide, is now stable in hospital. His condition is improving,” said an officer of the Bidhannagar police. “Legal action will be started against him once he is discharged from the hospital.”

The police had found multiple knives, a pair of scissors and a dan (a sharp tool used to slice fish and vegetables in households) scattered in the house. More than one officer said they were certain those were used to attack the woman.

Some medicines and a bottle of acid were also found in the house. A team of forensic experts has collected samples for tests.

“The forensic reports will help us determine the nature of the medicines and whether those were linked to the woman's death or the injuries on the man's body," an officer said.

The husband, who was an eye specialist in the army till he retired, was found sitting near the dining table with injuries. A portion of his face was burnt.
