Even as the police’s alleged slackness in the Kestopur murder incident is still etched freshly in the minds of people, the Haridevpur incident has once again put the police in a spot.

Criticising the police’s apathy, the family said that even if Ayan’s body was recovered on October 6 by Magrahat police, why did it take the Haridevpur police so long to inform the family. Why wasn’t the Haridevpur police coordinating with the nearby police stations, the devastated family asked.

However, the police have “admitted” their lapses.

Ayan’s family also alleged that the police took a lot of time to take their complaint.

The background

Ayan was last contacted in the wee hours of Dashami. The next morning, after a frantic search at all his friends’ places, the family approached the police.

Allegedly, the police initially did not take the missing diary complaint. The family further alleged that after much insistence, the cops located his mobile tower which was at Nepalgunj.

Meanwhile, on October 6, Magrahat police recovered Ayan’s body near the Magurpukur police camp around 9 am.

They marked it as that of an unidentified youth dead in unnatural circumstances and sent it for post-mortem around 10am. The police then mailed the youth’s details to all nearby police stations, including Bhabani Bhavan’s missing people’s squad and Lalbazar.

Most pertinent question

Ayan’s family has asked why didn’t the authorities of Haridevpur read the e-mail from Magrahat PS and even if they did, why didn’t they react?

Ayan’s family alleged that on October 7, after they knocked on the doors of Lal Bazar, Haridevpur police authorities “reacted” to the e-mail and informed the family that Magrahat police had recovered the body a day ago.

Though the police did not directly admit their lapses, DC SWD, Soumya Roy, said on Friday that intense initiatives from the police authorities at Haridevpur could have expedited things.

Till now, seven persons have been arrested, including Ayan’s girlfriend’s father, mother, brother and his friends.
